Heavyweight

HEAVYWEIGHT DIVISION (over 205 pounds)

Written by Douglas O. and The Rankings team at the Spot

1. Fedor Emelianenko: 30-1-1
There is not much here that needs explaining. We at The Spot put 'The Last Emperor' at number one and for good reason. He is the most dominant and lethal fighter in the history of the sport. He is the best heavyweight fighter in the hist all MMA as well
as the top pound for pound fighter in MMA. Nothing else really needs be said about the man named Fedor, his record speaks for itself.

2. Josh Barnett: [Free Agent] 24-5-0
The 'Baby Faced Assassin' was considered the only man that, at this point, who had a chance against the #1fighter in the world, Fedor.
He is undefeated since 2006, and has bested Jeff Monson, Pedro Rizzo, and Gilbert Yvel in that span. While he certainly possesses the tools to be a threat, it seems his mental game might be lacking. Just eight days before Affliction: Trilogy Barnett tested positive for poerformance enhancers and was denied a license. Barnett being unable to compete was eventually the final straw for Afflction, who cancelled the show and folded their promotion just two days after the test.

3. Brock Lesnar:  4-1-0
Lesnar is a mountain of a man, and might be the strongest UFC champion in history. He avenged his only loss at UFC 100 by dominating Frank Mir. Lesnar is displaying huge power in his hands, great wrestling, and the pure strength that will make him incredibly hard to defeat. While there were once questions of Brock's legitimacy as a top ten fighter, those doubts were seemingly erased with his most recent win. Until Lesnar tastes defeat again, it will be hard to question his rise from here on out.

4.
Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira:
31-5-1
Some would say that Nog was not 100% in his loss to Mir and many will argue that point till they are blue in the face. Regardless of whatever anyones thoughts on the subject Nog has stood the test of time. Over the last 10 years he has been one of the true great warriors in our sport. To rank him anywhere outside the top 5 without another loss in the near future would be not only be unwarranted but asinine.

5. Alistar Overeem:  29-11-0
Having seven solid wins in dominate fashion dating back to November of 07 (and what appeared would of been another to Cro Cop) Overeem is looking better and better. Many were looking forward to the much rumored fight for the Strikeforce HW title with Arlovski, but we now know we will have to wait for this much anticipated battle. Its The Spots opinion that a primed Overeem is only going to be going up in the ranks in the near future but for now Overeem will hold the sixth spot.

6. Shane Carwin:  11-0-0
Carwin is getting better and better every time we see him fight. The amazing thing is that Carwin is just getting started in the UFC and doesn't seem to be stopping anytime soon. If he keeps on this new smashing machine roll we are sure he will heading to the top of the heavyweight division sooner rather than later. For now he is number nine but who knows what the future holds.

7. Cain Valasquez:  6-0-0
Valaquez has shown absolute dominance in his young career. He blew through his first five opponents with superior striking and wrestling. In his most recent bout, he controlled Cheick Kongo for fifteen minutes. In that bout he displayed his world class wrestling, and an ability to strike and stay away from Kongo's strength. Cain has a date with Shane Carwin  coming up, and the winner of that bout may very well be the next in line for a shot at Brock Lesnar's heavyweight title.

8. Jeff Monson: [free agent] 30-8-0
This man is a work horse, 3 fights in 3 weeks, no one does that. Not to mention in those two fights he beat both Roy Nelson and Sergei Khartinonov which is no small feat. Monson's domination over Kharitonov alone is enough to put him in the top ten rankings, but add that with the amount of events that he has fought in you just cannot deny his placement. Another quality win for him will make him a lock. With a record of 30-8 things are looking bright for 'The Snowman'.

9. Junior Dos Santos: 8-1-0
Described by some as lacking Charisma (much like the now UFC Light Heavyweight Champ Lyoto Machida) Junior Dos Santos is making an obvious impact in the UFC and in a big way. He started his reign by TKO-ing top heavyweight Fabricio Werdum followed by a one sided victory over Stafan Struve. With him being a protégé of the Noguiera's its not a far stretch to see Dos Santos continuing in his winning ways in the octagon.

10. Frank Mir:  12-4-0
Frank Mir made an improbable run back to gold after beating Brock Lesnar and Antonio Nogueira. After losing to Lesnar at UFC 100, Mir must now recapture the magic and work his back through a muddled and quickly improving UFC heavyweight division.
Frank certainly has the ability to do it, but in order to get there, he'll have to battle through the likes of Carwin, Dos Santos, and Valasquez.

One 2 Watch:  Brett Rogers:  10-0-0

Brett 'The Grim' Rogers isn't exactly sneaking up on anyone, but his path to the top ten is not without question. The man has been so dominant and his his fights so quick, it has been difficult to get a read on just where he stands in over all ability. The crushed Ron Humphrey with knees, and took only twenty-two seconds to knock out Andrei Arlovski. Rogers is now in the hunt for a title shot, and with another big win should break into the top ten.
