Bellator Lightweight Champion Eddie Alvarez was successful in his championship bout against the challenger, Pat Curran, at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. for Bellator 39. In a battle that traversed the length of all five rounds, Alvarez dominated the striking convincingly in his first title defense since gaining the belt at Bellator 12 in June of 2009.

Bellator Lightweight Champion Eddie Alvarez is set to return to fighting for the first time in seven months, this weekend. He is scheduled to face Pat Curran in his first title defense. Alvarez has competed three times since winning the championship in 2009 but a catchweight fight, a non-title fight, and a trek to Japan to fight for Dream has left Alvarez without his first defense. Curran looks to keep his four-fight win streak alive and to take the belt home.

M-1 Global kicks off the European leg of their 2011 M-1 Selection tournament on April 1, live from the Ali Aliyev Sports Complex in Makhachkala, Russia. Comprised of eight fighters from each of the lightweight, welterweight, and heavyweight divisions, teams representing Eastern and Western Europe will battle it out for recognition on the world stage. In affiliation with M-1 Global, MMA Spot (www.mmaspot.net) will provide free live broadcast coverage to viewers around the globe beginning at 10 a.m. ET/7 a.m. PT.

Once the Nevada State Athletic Commission issues punishment for tampering with a urine sample, the UFC will likely lose one of their light heavyweight contenders for the remainder of 2011. Thiago Silva's post-fight drug test for UFC 125 has been under much scrutiny for the past several weeks, after it was announced he was being pulled from a bout with Quinton "Rampage" Jackson in May.

Judges announcing their scores between rounds (also known as “open scoring”) has been a matter of increasing debate within mixed martial arts in recent years. Fans and pundits nationwide are divided about whether it would improve or hurt the sport of MMA. Much has been written lately about the possibility of moving toward open scoring, but usually such articles center around frustration concerning a particular bad decision. There have not been many detailed investigations that have explored both the arguments for and against it, while offering a variety of opinions.

When “The Ultimate Fighter” returns to Spike TV, coaches Brock Lesnar and Junior Dos Santos will attempt to hone the skills of 14 unsigned welterweights. With a mixed cast of notable names and rising prospects, this season could produce at least a few UFC mainstays. The second part of our preview will focus on the fighters pegged as the season’s wild cards and long shots to win the tournament.

Ultimate Cage Battles is proud to announce the full lineup for a stacked night of pro fights at Ohio Nets Sports Complex in Parma, Ohio on April 9. In the night’s main event, Black House product Eduardo Pamplona will take on Finney’s H.I.T. Squad member Joe Bunch in a 178-pound catchweight bout. In addition to the main event, six more pro fights are set to take part of what will be the best event in Northeast Ohio this year. In the night’s co-main event, “Cujo” Joe McCall will take on Patrick Harman in a heavyweight bout.

On Saturday evening, Bellator Fighting Championships opened their highly-anticipated light heavyweight tournament from Harrah’s Tunica Hotel and Casino in Tunica, Mississippi. Broadcast on MTV2, the event was special for several reasons. While upsets seemed to rule the night, including the top two tournament favorites falling, the highlight of the night came from Richard Hale, who submitted Nik Fekete in spectacular fashion.

Friday Night’s "M-1 Challenge XXIV: Damkovsky vs. Figueroa" treated fight fans with an exciting card full of finishes and highlights. Two new champions were crowned, and a host of new stars began their rise to the top from the Constant Center in Norfolk, Virginia. Broadcast on cable giant Showtime, the event and production was praised by M-1’s Evgeni Kogan, global director of operations for the Russian-based MMA promotion.

It was not an impressive night for the two biggest names on the Titan Fighting Championships 17 card, but both Bobby Lashley and Phil Baroni walked away with victories. Friday’s event, broadcast on HDNet from Memorial Hall in Kansas City, Kansas, was not without its moments though, including an almost-incredible comeback by Lashley’s opponent John Ott.

One week after Jon Jones became the youngest UFC champion in history, a man who could one day challenge him will be in action in the main event on Spike TV. Phil Davis, a former NCAA Division-I wrestling champion, will look to stay unbeaten when he takes on Antonio Rogerio Nogueira in a light heavyweight tilt.
