· “CFFC 7: No Mercy” Recap, Results, & Photos
Cage Fury Fighting Championships' "CFFC 7: No Mercy" was a blockbuster event that took place Saturday, April 16, 2011 at the Resorts Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City, N.J. CFFC 7 gave us eight fights featuring athletes making their pro debuts, while also including up-and-coming stars and a UFC veteran.
The main event of the night was a fast-paced slug-fest featuring Andre Gusmao and Tim Williams. Gusmao fought a gritty fight, managing to catch Williams many times with well-timed strikes. In the first two rounds, Gusmao was able to regain his composure after being rattled to make Williams pay for his assault. Despite his well executed offense, it just was not enough to stop the hard-headed Williams.
The story of this fight saw Tim Williams being slightly quicker with his strikes. Every round had Gusmao rocked from a Williams straight right, at the beginning of the third round the punch found its target flush and sent Gusmao crumbling to the canvas. Knowing the end was near, Williams jumped on the downed fighter to earn the technical knockout stoppage.
James Funaro made his pro debut in quick fashion at CFFC 7. His opponent, Billy Dee Williams, went for an immediate takedown but instead of working for a sprawl, Funaro jumped to guard and went for a guillotine. He successfully secured the choke during a second attempt en route to a submission victory.
In a non-fighting act that shows great character in Billy Dee Williams, CFFC, and the promotion's main sponsor Krazy Horse Caberet, Billy Dee Williams donated his fight purse to his friend and training partner, Scott Fairlamb who was recently diagnosed with Leukemia. Upon hearing of this selfless act, CFFC and Krazy Horse Caberet decided to match and double the donation in order to help a fighter take on a tougher battle outside the cage.
In another interesting moment of the night involving Kyle Cerminara and Ariel Sepulveda, Cerminara learned that Sepulveda practices dentistry in his spare time. In the first round of their three round fight, after getting tagged with a hard strike the mouthpiece of Cerminara went flying from his mouth, along with two of his front teeth. When the ref stopped the fight to have the mouthpiece cleaned up Cerminara showed the damage done but chose to continue with the fight. After close examination of the mouthpiece his teeth were found embedded in it, and put away for safe keeping.
In what proved to be the slug-fest of the night, Dave Church took on Neil Johnson. In the second round both fighters looked as if they threw away any game-plans and striking defense, deciding only to throw punches. Neil Johnson, while using some head movement, managed to avoid punishment and land a greater number of shots where one finally dropped the hard-headed Church to the canvas as the bell rung to end round two. Church, slow to get to his corner, was quickly checked out by the doctor who ended the fight and giving Neil Johnson the TKO win.
