· Edgar vs. Maynard III Off UFC 130, Both Fighters Injured
After one of the most memorable title bouts in recent memory went to a draw, UFC President Dana White called for an immediate rematch between Champion Frankie Edgar and undefeated challenger Gray Maynard. That rematch, scheduled for May 28, will now have to wait. According to UFC officials, both fighters have sustained injuries that have forced each off of the card.
White told the media today that the fighters should be out six to eight weeks, and that the originally planned co-main event of Quinton Jackson vs. Matt Hamill will now move into the marquee slot at UFC 130, set for the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nev.
According to reports, Frankie Edgar (13-1-1) recently suffered a rib injury, while Maynard (10-0-1) reportedly has a knee injury.
The championship bout was to be the third between the two. Maynard gave Edgar his one and only loss back in 2008, in which he out wrestled Edgar to win a unanimous decision. Since then Edgar has reeled off five straight wins, defeating former champion Sean Sherk and taking the title from B.J. Penn.
At UFC 125 in January, Maynard looked as if he was on his way to a lopsided victory over the champion, knocking him down and stunning the champ several times in the first round. However, Edgar battled back, taking at least three of the four remaining rounds, forcing the draw.
As of now, the card will simply move forward “as is” with Jackson vs. Hamill taking the main event, and Thiago Alves vs. Rick Story moving from the preliminary card to the pay-per-view portion of the card. Replacing that bout on the Spike TV prelims will be “The Ultimate Fighter” winner Kendall Grove vs. Tim Boetsch.
