· Hominick Earns Title Shot With Win At “UFC: Fight For The Troops 2”
Jose Aldo's next title defense could be decided on Jan. 22, if veteran fighter Mark Hominick upholds his end of the bargain.
UFC President Dana White announced that Hominick, a native of Ontario, will face Aldo for the UFC featherweight title at UFC 129 in Toronto with a win over George Roop at "UFC: Fight for the Troops 2" on Jan. 22.
Aldo, the final WEC champion and inaugural UFC featherweight champion, was originally slated to make his UFC debut against Josh Grispi at UFC 125 before he was forced to pull out of the fight due to injury.
A matchup between Aldo and Hominick could feature an exciting standup battle, with Aldo specializing in Muay Thai and Hominick being a kickboxer. True to the form of MMA, both fighters are also well-versed in the ground game and would be comfortable if the fight ended up on the mat as well.
UFC 129, targeted for April 30, already features one title fight with Georges St-Pierre defending his welterweight title against Jake Shields. A light heavyweight battle between former champions Randy Couture and Lyoto Machida will also be part of the event.
The UFC's debut in Ontario, which began sanctioning MMA events on Jan. 1, 2011, will take place at the 60,000-seat Rogers Centre. The show is expected to break UFC attendance and gate figure records, which were both set at Canadian events.
