Shine 2: ATT vs The World - Recap & Photos
posted by J. Andrew Yount
Perhaps the secret to ATT’s success tonight was the team’s support for their fighters. Many prominent ATT members cornered fighters, such as J.Z. Calvan, Mike Brown, Tyron Woodley. Other top stars Jeff Monson and Charles McCarthy caught the action with the crowd.
Current Strikeforce, and former UFC star, Jorge Gurgel, was also on hand tonight to provide commentary and the post-fight interviews.
The main event featured Jorge Patino vs Roan Carneiro. Round 1 saw a tactical battle on the ground for position ultimately leading to controversy. As Carneiro sank in an armbar, Patino hit Carneiro several times in the back of the head; leading the referee to stand the fighters up and warning Patino not to hit the back of the head. Unlike several prior fights, the referee did not take a point from Patino and perhaps prevented Carneiro from securing the armbar victory. The second and third round saw much of the same battle for positioning on the ground. The fight ended in favor for Carneiro by unanimous decision (29-28; 30-27; 30-27).
James Warfield vs Yves Edwards – The fight of the night belonged to James Warfield and Yves Edwards. Coming off two losses, an injury, and 10 months off, Edwards was hungry for victory. This fight promised action from the moment Warfield entered the cage by summersault. Although Edwards was the crowd favorite, Warfield won fans over with his determination inside the cage. The first round saw heavy blows from both fighters, action within the clinch, and from the guard, as well as, takedowns. The second round opens with more heavy blows from each fighter. When the fight goes to the ground, both fighters scramble to improve their positioning. In the middle of the round, Warfield found himself in an Edwards’ triangle. Warfield stayed calm in the position while Edwards’ scooted around the cage in an attempt to make the choke tighter. The crowd is on its feet cheering for Edwards to finish the submission. Edwards was eventually successful and Warfield tapped at
Ryan Healy vs Luiz Firmino – All three rounds saw a battle for positioning on the ground with several submission attempts. In the third round, the referee takes a point from Ryan Healy for kicking a downed opponent. Firmino’s hand was raised in victory with a unanimous decision win. All three judges scored the contest 30-26 for Firmino.
Flavio Alvaro vs Jean Silva – These two fighters displayed their skill set for the fans. They left everything in the cage; trading heavy blows, takedowns, submission attempts, and takedown defense. In the second round, the referee took a point from Silva for holding the fence while Alvaro was attempting a takedown. The third round saw Silva attempting an ankle lock that he eventually gives up and Alvaro attempting a choke. The two traded blows until the horn sounded the end of the fight. Alvaro won by majority decision.
Anthony Morrison vs Micah Miller – Miller was a strong crowd favorite, with his family and friends in the crowd cheering him on and his brother, Cole Miller, in his corner. Round 1 begins in the clinch with Miller attempting a takedown, which Morrison stuffs by grabbing the fence. The referee stops the fight to take a point from Morrison. When the action begins again, Miller is successful at gaining the takedown. Miller attempts to soften Morrison up with punches to sink in a choke, but Morrison survives the first round. Round 2 begins with Morrison scoring a textbook takedown, Matt Hughes style, near his corner. Morrison is unable to keep Miller on the ground. Miller then takes Morrison to the ground and works to sink in the hooks. At
Junior Assuncao vs Pete Grimes – UFC veteran Junior Assuncao put on a jiu-jitsu clinic for three. Each round saw a battle for better positioning with Grimes escaping each submission attempt. Grimes was game for the battle and trades heavy blows with Assuncao. Assuncao wins by a controversial split decision victory. Jorge Gurgel tells Assuncao in the post-fight interview that he scored every round for Assuncao and the crowd agrees with Gurgel.
Herbert Goodman vs James Brasco – Round 1 saw Brasco working in the clinch and getting a takedown. Brasco works to the get the full mount and rains down punches on Goodman. Goodman is able to reverse his position and puts Brasco in a body triangle to flatten Brasco out to attempt a choke. Brasco is able to survive the first round. Round 2 begins with the two trading blows with Brasco scoring another takedown landing in Goodman’s butterfly guard, eventually getting mount, but the referee would stand the two up as Goodman defended well. Towards the end of the round, Brasco attempts a weak takedown ultimately leading to Brasco on his back with Goodman landing several blows before the horn. The third round saw Brasco getting a quick takedown and mount. After another stand up, another shot by Brasco would be defended. Goodman ended the fight by technical knockout due to strikes. Although Brasco had dominated the majority of the fight, in the endGoodman was able to pull out the victory.
Phil Friedman vs Brian Fuery – The first fight of the night saw former NFL player Brian Fuery making his pro debut in this heavyweight match-up. Brian Fuery made short work of Friedman, submitting him by choke at
Although the numbers have not been released yet, the event itself was a success. The fights were terrific, and the crowd was great. Many of the fans in attendance were hopeful for more exciting fights to come.
