Swick Injured; Daley To Replace Him Against Kampmann

posted by J. Andrew Yount

Mike Swick’s loss will be Paul Daley’s gain. Swick has suffered a concussion during training, costing him valuable training time for what was billed as being the #1 welterweight contender bout at the upcoming UFC 103 on September 19 in Dallas. Newly acquired Paul Daley has already reportedly agreed to step in to face Swick’s opponent, Martin Kampmann, on the card.

Swick (14-2) has won four straight bouts since joining the UFC’s welterweight division. His only UFC loss was a decision loss to top middleweight Yushin Okami back in 2007. Swick has confirmed to several outlets that he has indeed been forced to pull out of the bout, citing a foot sweep and subsequent fall for the cause of the concussion. A Texas native, Swick had been looking forward to competing in front of his hometown crowd.

Englishman Paul Daley (21-8-2), who became a free agent when Affliction folded last month, has won nine of his last eleven contests, all by stoppage. The big power puncher was already scheduled to compete on the undercard of the event against Brian Foster. The injury to Swick puts Daley back into a position to regain the top ten status he had prior to a loss to Jake Shields nearly a year ago. UFC has yet to confirm Daley as the replacement; however several outlets have reported the change.

It is unlikely that the winner of the bout will receive a match up with champion Geores St. Pierre, as originally slated.
