Josh Neer Officially Replaces Sherk At "UFC 104"
posted by C. M. Holden
According to the UFC’s official website, Sean Sherk has been removed from his scheduled bout with Gleison Tibau and his replacement has now been secured. Miletich fighter Josh “The Dentist” Neer will face the American Top Team product, Tibau, on the main card of “UFC 104: Machida vs. Shogun,” set to take place on Oct. 24 live from the Staples Center in Los Angeles, Calif.
Earlier this week, Sherdog reported that Sherk was forced to withdraw from the match due to a shoulder injury suffered during training. Word from his manager Monte Cox has the one-time UFC lightweight champion sidelined for a minimum of four weeks. Despite the comments from Cox, there have been unsubstantiated claims that Sherk withdrew due to his recent selection to undergo a random drug test administered by the California State Athletic Commission. However, Cox quickly dismissed these rumors.
Neer (25-8-1) last competed at “UFC 101: Declaration” on Aug. 1 where he lost a unanimous decision to Kurt "Batman" Pellegrino. Prior to that Neer defeated “The Ultimate Fighter” Mac Danzig via submission (triangle choke) at “UFC Fight Night 17,” where both Danzing and Neer were awarded a $30,000 “Fight of the Night” bonus for their collective performance.
Tibau’s (19-6) previous bout was against Melvin Guillard at “The Ultimate Fighter 9 Finale” on June 20, where Tibau came up slightly short, losing via split decision.
“UFC 104: Machida vs. Shogun” marks only the second time the UFC promoted a show in Los Angeles. The last time the organization staged an event in the city was at “UFC 60: Hughes vs. Gracie” on May 27, 2006.
