Welterweight
WELTERWEIGHT DIVISION (170-pound limit)
1. Georges St. Pierre: 19-2-0
Making a very strong case for consideration as the top pound for pound fighter in the world, George St. Pierre has not faultered since his upset loss to Matt Serra in 2007. Since then, the welterweight champion has run through Josh Koscheck, Matt Hughes, avenged his loss to Serra, Jon Fitch, B.J. Penn, and most recently Thiago Silva. With one of the most impressive resumes in recent memory behind him. GSP has looked absolutely unstoppable of late. The UFC Welterweight champ now sits atop of the world and waits for his next opponent to be determined.
2. Thiago Alves: 16-4-0
Thiago has put together quite a win streak and evolved to a remarkable well rounded fighter. After dismantling former WW champ Matt Hughes, a dominant decision win over highly acclaimed Josh Koscheck, and knocking out perrenial top welterweight Karo Parisyan, he earned a shot at the belt. Unfortunately the man holding that title was Georges St. Pierre. The deadly striker spent nearly all five rounds of the welterweight clash on his back, but showed a level of heart that had been seen as lackign through his career. Impressive in a loss, Alves will now look to rebound as he keeps improving, in hopes that one day he can take the crown from the king.
3. Jake Shields: 22-4-1
Considered one of the best grapplers in not just the WW division but maybe all of MMA, Shields is looking to test himself against current Strikeforce MW champ Robbie Lawler in their June 6th show in St. Luis. His recent WW wins are against the British striking phenom Paul Daley, Mike Pyle and Top 10 WW Nick "The Goat" Thompson. Shields has been on a roll the last few years and hasn't tasted defeat since late 2004.
4. Jon Fitch: 18-3-0
Prior to his decision loss to the UFC's WW champ GSP late last summer, Fitch had a perfect 8-0 record in the UFC dating all the way back to 2005. Since said loss he beat one of the most charismatic fighters in MMA Akihiro Gono at UFC 94. In his next bout, he looks to avenge the KO loss of AKA teammate Josh Koscheck against UFC newcomer the Brazilian Paulo Thiago.
5. Matt Hughes: 42-7-0
Love him or hate him Matt Hughes has been a main stay in welterweight division for a long time. So much so that he has held the belt longer than anyone in the UFC period. Hughes has had a rough run as of late. Will we ever see the aggressive slamming machine that we use to love to watch, whether it was to win or to lose. At UFC 99 he returned to his winning ways with a victory Matt Serra, even that however was not without a scare early on. The once dominant, smug fighter known as Matt Hughes is slipping whether it be due to age or passion. He is in our book still a champion and continues to display heart.
6. Martin Kampmann 15-2-0
The Hitman just dropped down to WW and wins a close decision over Carlos Condit pretty impressive. With MW wins against guys like Thales Leites and Drew Mcfedries we see a bright future ahead for Kampmann in the WW division.
7. Matt Serra: 9-5-0
Lots of questions surround Matt "The Terror" Serra. Serra catapulted himself to the top of the weightclass in around this time 2 years ago with a win over GSP. Since then, lingering injuries have limited him to competing only one since then, losing the rematch to St. Pierre via TKO at UFC 83 and a grudge match with Matt Hughes at UFC 99. The question still remains; is Matt even in the right weight class? Even with a decision loss to Hughes, Serra still put the welterweight legend in trouble early, nearly knocking him out early in the first round.
8. Mike Swick: 13-2-0
Mike "The Quick" Swick has been on an awesome run of late. Since dropping from MW, he has yet to be defeated and has wins over the likes of the hard hitting Marcus Davis, Josh Burkman, Jonathan Goulet, and Ben Saunders. Swick has now been matched with Martin Kampman at UFC 103 to determine the next number-one contedner to Georges St. Pierrre's title reign.
9. Carlos Condit: 23-5-0
Down but not out Carlos Condit just lost a razor-thin split decision in what was considered by many the fight of the year to Martin "The Hitman" Kampmann. Carlos had to fight a natural middle weight in his UFC debut and did pretty well in our eyes. We here at The Spot would like to see him get comfortable in the UFC and go on to dominate like he did in the WEC. We know he has the skills but now the bar has been raised. Now matched with Chris Lytle at Fight Night 19, 2 hope to see him rise to the occasion. We know what he can do it.
10. Nick Thompson: [Free Agent] 38-10-1
Probably one of the most underrated WW fighters in all MMA. This guy’s game is so strong that when he was with Bodog people thought he was the second coming of Matt Hughes however the game of MMA has evolved and that style needs to evolve also. As many fights as the Goat has had to keep food on the table, he is doing very well for someone who likes to keep active and will take a fight a month right after he just had a fight. With that in mind I think he is more like a young Jeremy Horn but WW. Will he stay in the top ten? Better up his game and beat some bigger names because he is just holding on to tenth place in the first place.
One 2 watch:
Josh Koscheck: 12-4
Losing to previously unranked Paulo Thiago hurt Koscheck and dropped him just outside of the top 10. With a 3-3 record in his last six, and although two of those loses have come to the current #1 and #2 WWs, ‘Kos’ is still one of the best, and is likely to be right back in the top 10 with another win.
